Nano Banana 2.5: what's actually known

"Nano Banana 2.5" is not a name Google chose. It is a name the community built by extrapolating from the last time this happened.

In August 2025 an anonymous image model called nano-banana started appearing in Arena's blind image battles. Nobody claimed it. It beat well-known models often enough that people started hunting for its origin, and the codename spread far past the Arena community. Later that month Google DeepMind published it as Gemini 2.5 Flash Image — and the banana name stuck so firmly that Google itself ended up using it.

So when a new unclaimed model called spicy-mayo turned up in the same place, the community reached for the same pattern and started calling the thing behind it Nano Banana 2.5. That is the entire provenance of the name. It is a placeholder for "whatever Google ships next on this line", not a product.

Separating the three tiers matters more than usual here, because almost everything written about this model online presents tier three as tier one.

The blind-battle window is the only period where anyone outside Google can form an independent impression of a model. Once it launches, the framing comes from a launch post and a benchmark table. Right now the only evidence that exists is what people see in battles and write down.

That is also why the evidence tiers on this site are strict. The temptation during a codename phase is to publish a confident spec sheet and collect the traffic. We would rather publish a short list that is true and mark the rest as unknown, because the moment there is an official statement, every page here that guessed will be wrong on the record.
